If you are about to apply for a mortgage, loan, new credit card or any other form of credit, then you might have sensibly decided that it is time to get a free credit report. With loans so difficult to come by at present, this certainly is a good and welcome move and could potentially avert the disaster of being refused in error.

On top of the report, the potential lender will also consider your income, which the credit report will not show. This means that it is only an approximation, but it will show you any nasty surprised, such as loans that you forgot you had missed payments on last year.

Once you have seen your credit report file and checked it, you might have found slight errors in the report. In this case you have to write to the lender that provided the information and ask them to amend their records. Once they have done this, they will then update your credit report.

It is also possible that there are searches recorded on your credit report you are not aware of. These are recorded every time a potential lender views your report in order to decide whether to lend you money. If some of these are not familiar to you, it is worth checking them out. If there are a lot of these, or for a lot of money, then be very careful with your checking as it can be a sign of identity theft.

Loans that are paid off, county court judgements and arrears will show for usually around 6 years. Searches, where a lender has looked at your report, will only usually show for about 12 months.

We had a history seminar today at our online stock trading club.

Since the markets have been on a roller coaster ride we have been trying to reassure each other that we know what we’re doing.

This has met with limited success. When people are down twenty, thirty or forty percent in their assets, it can make for an anxious time. Even the online brokers are having a tough time assuaging their clients.

Online stock trading and options trading for me has been quite good, but I admit that I’m as confused at the rest in what to do going forward.

I will work to hedge my long term holdings some, by buying some puts. And then as addi-tional security I will look at buying some calls for the same. Yet, I’m not alone in doing this, so rates are not going to be rock bottom for any of these.

So this morning, Mr. Callahan came back to talk to the club. He was brought in by a member who figured that talking to someone who had seen a great deal of trading history might help us find our own individual directions.

Mr. Callahan, was a trader for many years down at the old Chicago Board of Trade. He was actually actively trading when Black Tuesday hit, in 1929. He was very young, maybe 21. He is 101 now.

Mr. Callahan apologized when he greeted us. He was still wearing his athletic clothes from his morning routine at Cardinal Fitness. And he was planning on running a few miles after he talked. He declined any offers of food, as he preferred to run on an empty stomach.

Mr. Callahan’s advice was to watch the fundamentals. If the credit markets loosen, there still has to be demand for credit, like any other product. Watch the earnings reports. Most will not be spectacular.

Business of all types will be pulling back. Pulling back means less demand for credit to finance growth.
Check the consumer, too, he added. Most consumers are leveraged to the maximum. They have very little disposable income remaining. Plus, many have taken a hit in their retirement ac-counts and their biggest financial asset — their homes– have sunk in value. This does not foretell a rosy future.

Still, he said, there is money to be made. Some investors will be energized by the recent gov-ernment action and will drive up certain sectors, and then will oversell other sectors reacting to poor but not horrible news.

Be ready then.

He reminded us before he jogged off that he made a tidy fortune during the Panic of 1929. He had been holding short positions in a lot of stocks, and wasn’t suckered back into the market on a “dead cat bounce”.

The reality is also clear. The merchant funding companies must take extremely high risks in this high-default industry. The banks and other traditional funding sources won’t touch this kind of risk. These advances are not loans. A merchant cash funder agrees in writing to buy a specific amount of your future credit card sales at a discount.

In our example above he is buying $13,000 of your credit card sales for the next 4 months by advancing you $10,000 now. Or you may need more time and he agrees to buy $15,000 worth over 12 months for the same $10,000. The funder will require the merchant account or processing company to “holdback” or reserve the agreed on percentage of all your daily credit card sales to pay directly to the funder’s company until he is paid.

This holdback will often range between 5% and 25% of your credit card sales. Let’s assume your cc sales are $12,000 monthly and your holdback is 20%. Then you must pay $2,400 per month until the advance is paid off.

The good news for merchants is you do not have to personally guarantee a merchant advance, no collateral is required and poor credit by itself will not disqualify your application. The most important advice I can give you is to do your homework by asking questions.

It’s worth taking a look around the world to see what’s going on. I’ve realized that I’ve spent too much time focused on the markets and conditions in the United States, a bad habit, considering the world is in this together.

I know I’ve been tempted to be an ostrich and hide my head in the sand, but in the world of online brokers, online stock trading and online options trading there can be no sissies.

The outlook was mixed. Every analyst was guessing. But there were some interesting points.

Most seem to think that the new plan from the U.S. Treasury Department is good.
